Pregnancy care at Jo’s Midwifery and Lactation is all about making sure you feel empowered, supported, and well-informed throughout your entire pregnancy journey.
I offer a personal, down-to-earth approach that centers on your individual needs, bringing both experience and genuine care to each and every visit we have together.
My antenatal care begins with personalised appointments and pregnancy care plan, that allows time for us to explore every aspect of your pregnancy. You’ll get comprehensive education on all the stages of pregnancy, labour, lactation and early parenting, ensuring you feel knowledgeable and confident.
My support includes everything from birth planning and understanding your options for childbirth to guiding you through informed decision-making with insights into topics like VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean), natural birth options, and optimal fetal positioning.
I also integrate my knowledge of the local resources around Cairns, connecting you with trusted allied health professionals if additional support is needed, making sure your care is thorough and seamlessly integrated. I provide both in-person and telehealth options, giving you flexibility whether you’re in Cairns or the surrounding areas, so my care fits into your life, not the other way around.
My care is continuous, meaning we’ll work together from the early days of pregnancy right through to postpartum. With each visit, I strive to create a warm, professional space where you can freely discuss your feelings, concerns, and goals. I'm here to answer every question—big or small—and to help you feel calm and prepared as your birth approaches.
My pregnancy care approach isn’t just about preparing for the big day; it’s about empowering you, nurturing your health, and honouring your preferences in every way with compassionate care.
Homebirth at Jo’s Midwifery and Lactation is a beautifully empowering experience, giving you the freedom to welcome your baby in the comfort and warmth of your own home. From pregnancy to birth and postpartum, I offer unwavering, personalised midwifery care, supporting you every step of the way.
Choosing a homebirth means I will be there from the earliest stages of pregnancy, providing all antenatal care in a relaxed, supportive setting. I’ll help you prepare your home, equip you with knowledge, and ensure you feel confident and ready.
I am a highly experienced midwife with 20 plus years working with families supporting birth in a hospital and birth centre environment. I value the benefits of continuity of care and my passion is supporting physiological birth which is why I worked towards being able to support women to birth at home.
Studies have shown that planned homebirths with a qualified midwife are associated with fewer interventions, high maternal satisfaction, and positive breastfeeding outcomes, among many other benefits. I combine my skills with a deep understanding of your unique needs and preferences, supporting you to achieve a calm, low-intervention birth.
Should any additional input from local maternity care providers be needed or requested, I collaborate with Cairns Hospital to create a seamless care plan. This includes ensuring all care remains connected and fluid, with your informed consent guiding each decision.
Postpartum, I provide thorough follow-up care in those early weeks, helping you with newborn care, lactation consultant support, and the adjustment into motherhood. This level of continuity means you’re supported by the same trusted midwife through the entire journey—from the first antenatal appointment, through the beautiful experience of homebirth, and beyond. For families in Cairns and surrounding areas, my midwifery service provides all the safety, personalisation, and care you’d want, right in the heart of your home.
Postpartum care with Jo's Midwifery and Lactation is designed to provide you continuous, compassionate support tailored to you and your baby’s needs. Whether you’re transitioning from pregnancy care with me or starting with me in the postpartum period, I am here to help you make these first weeks feel manageable, supported, and empowering. Through Medicare rebates, postpartum visits with myself are accessible and unlimited in the first 6 weeks, reducing out-of-pocket costs for essential, comprehensive midwifery care.
I offer a postpartum approach that goes beyond basic check-ins; with our postpartum visits being focused on supporting your physical recovery, emotional well-being, and adjusting to motherhood. This includes guidance on newborn care, breastfeeding support, and any practical help you may need as you settle in. I understand that the early days of motherhood come with a mix of joys and challenges, and I am there to listen, provide insights, and offer reassurance.
For those who may be starting their journey with me in postpartum, this period of care can be crucial in helping you build confidence and find your rhythm as a new mother. My support extends to birth debriefing, sleep tips, and even partner and family guidance. Whether you’re facing feeding challenges, experiencing overwhelm, or simply need someone to check in with, my approach is personalised to meet your unique needs.
I am trained in Neuroprotective Developmental Care, the latest evidence-based approach to infant feeding, cry fuss issues, sleep and perinatal and infant mental health. This is an approach that is based on cued care, values, workability and promotes finding joy and meaning during your parenting journey.
With flexible options for home visits or telehealth, I make postpartum support accessible, allowing you to focus on what matters most—your healing, bonding with your baby, and enjoying the precious early days of motherhood.
As a lactation consultant with years of experience, I know how important those early feeding days are—for you and for your baby. My lactation services are all about giving you the personalised support you need to make breastfeeding as comfortable and fulfilling as possible. Whether you’re preparing for breastfeeding during pregnancy, navigating those first feeds after birth, or encountering any challenges along the way, I’m here to guide you with expertise and understanding.
Lactation support can be incredibly beneficial, especially in the early days when both you and your baby are learning together. As a lactation consultant, I specialise in addressing a range of needs: helping with latch issues, providing positioning tips, assessing milk supply, and offering guidance for overcoming challenges like sore nipples, tongue-tie, or low milk production. Breastfeeding is natural, but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy—and having support can make a world of difference in both comfort and confidence.
During our sessions, I focus on finding solutions that work best for you, offering follow-up calls to check in on your progress and any additional visits if needed. My goal is to empower you with the skills and knowledge you need to make breastfeeding a positive experience, no matter where your journey takes you. I’m passionate about supporting families in Cairns and surrounding areas, providing the tools and encouragement to help you meet your feeding goals.
